Episode 16 Part 2
Marta is in Mr. Cook's office. MR. COOK: Ms. Cardona, you do very well as head of your line. MARTHA: Thank you. MR. COOK: But now that Mr. Flores is gone, I want to offer you his position. Manager of the assembly line. Are you interested? MARTA: Me? Wow. MR. COOK: I must tell you, Ms. Cardona, this is not an easy job. As the manager, you'll have to keep schedules, handle accounts, talk to people who are having problems. MARTA: A line worker has an easier job than a manager. But I think I'm ready. MR. COOK: I think so, too. MARTA: Thank you so much, Mr. Cook! (Laughs) Mr. Marcus lectures. MARCUS: Throughout history, most men went to work and provided support for the family. Women, on the other hand, stayed at home and raised the children. We call these "traditional roles." JUAN CARLOS: What's wrong with that? MARCUS: Well, things have changed now. More and more women do things that men used to do. Many work at full time jobs. They participate in politics. And of positions of leadership. Can anybody tell me the meaning of "leadership"? JUAN CARLOS: Someone who tells people what to do. KIM: Someone who's smart and brave. VIVIANA: How about someone who can make difficult decisions? Mr. Cook takes out a folder MR. COOK: OK, You know that in the last two weeks the orders have become more complicated. MARTA: I know. When we fill orders, we need to be more careful. MR. COOK: Yes. And I'm afraid there's one worker who's not careful. I need you to talk to her. MARTA: Oh, no problem. For me, talking to workers is the easiest thing to do. MR. COOK: Well, this may be the hardest thing to do. You may have to fire her. MARTA: Fire her? Mr. Cook hands her the folder. Marta opens it. She is completely shocked. MARTA: Dora? Mr. Cook watches Marta's reaction. MARCUS: Good leaders must make difficult decisions. But let me ask you this. Can anyone be a leader? JUAN CARLOS: Sure. Any guy can be a boss. VIVIANA: Any guy? KIM: What about women? MARCUS: Yes, what about WOMEN, Mr. Gomez? JUAN CARLOS: Come on, Mr. Marcus. Women leaders? Are you kidding? Girls are too emotional. They can't handle stressful situations. DREW: They cry too much! Viviana is shocked! VIVIANA: You are joking right? JUAN CARLOS: No. Look at the facts. Have we had a woman President? No. How about most companies? Who do you think runs them? Not women. Marta approaches Dora who's working at her station. MARTA: Hi, Dora! DORA: Hi, Marta. I love it that you're the new boss. MARTA: (struggling) Well, I wanted to talk to you about your numbers. You're not putting together enough orders in one day. DORA: Why are you picking on me? Just because you're the new boss? I'm not the slowest worker. Alexander is slower than me and I know I'm as good as Helen. MARTA: Well, I have to make sure everyone is doing their numbers. I want to help you as much as I can. So, tell me, what's the problem? Why are your numbers low? Dora is quite embarrassed by the question. MARTA: Dora, I know I can help you work a little faster. But you have to tell me what the problem is. Dora is VERY uncomfortable with Marta's question and goes off. DORA: What? You think just because you're the new boss, you're better than me? I don't have to tell you anything. I don't work quickly and I don't work slowly. I just work. Dora leaves her station. Marta is quite surprised and confused. VIVIANA: I can't believe I'm hearing this. What's wrong with you? KIM: Juan Carlos, did you know that Vivianna's mom is the head of her entire assembly line? JUAN CARLOS: (sarcastic) And she's probably, really good, right? VIVIANA: Yes, she is. JUAN CARLOS: Head of an assembly line. Big deal. But could she be a manager? I don't think so. MARCUS: Okay, you guys. Class is over. We'll pick this up next time. Juan Carlos starts to pick up his things. He looks over to Drew. JUAN CARLOS: Well, no girl is ever going to be my boss. That's for sure. They exit. VIVIANA: I can't believe I ever liked Juan Carlos. KIM: I can't believe I ever liked Drew.
