The roles of women have changed dramatically in the past two decades. In the past, women were responsible for the care of the children and the home. The men were responsible for the financial support of the family. In the past, even if women worked outside the home, they thought their own jobs were not as important as their husbands' jobs.
Today, both women and men often have jobs in order to maintain a family and home. Today, more than 60% of women are in the labor force. One-half of married women with young children are working outside the home.
Six out of ten service workers are women and 40% of managerial and administrative workers are women. Women even make up 15% of military personnel. Despite such progress, however, women only earn 72 cents for every dollar earned by men.
Even though more women work, they still do most of the household chores and say they get a lot of satisfaction from family life. The greatest difference in the roles of women today is reflected in the fact that 35% of women do not have children.
