Episode 5 Part 2
Karina and family approach the Vendor at the newsstand. VENDOR: Can I help you? VICTOR: (proudly) Yes. We are looking for an apartment-- KARINA: And we need to find a newspaper with a list of apartments for rent. VENDOR; Oh, yes! The Vendor picks up a copy of the L.A. Times, L.A. Weekly, and New Times. VENDOR: The city papers will have listings. But you should also look at the neighborhood papers. Do you want to live near here? KARINA: Well, we both work close by and we don't have a car, so we must find an apartment near here. And also, my mother lives near here and she takes care of Max when we are at work. VENDOR: Hi. What size apartment are you looking for? VICTOR: Now we live in a studio apartment and it's too small. Our new apartment must have two bedrooms. KARINA: And it has to cost less than $800 a month. That is all we can afford. Victor spots HOT TUB MAGAZINE on the newsstand and picks it up. VICTOR: And it has to have a hot tub! Karina gives him a look. VICTOR (CONTINUED): OK, maybe it doesn't have to have a hot tub. We'll take these then. VENDOR: Sure. They share a laugh, buy the papers and go. The TV is on. A cheesy commercial for an ambulance chasing attorney "Herman Hedley" comes on. Little Max watches. Karina and Victor sit at the small kitchen table. They look through different newspapers. HERMAN: (ON TV) Do you have housing problems? You need a new place But I, Herman Hedley, Attorney at Law, can help because I, Herman Hedley, am the "I Can" Man. So give me a call. KARINA: (circling a listing) Here is one. Victor throws his paper on the table in frustration. KARINA: What? VICTOR: What language is this? It's not Russian. It's not English. I do not understand these words. KARINA: These are abbreviations to save space in the paper. VICTOR: How am I supposed to understand these abbreviations? Karina picks up his paper and moves closer. KARINA: Victor, you must look here. APT -- see? That means apartment. BR -- bedroom. AC -- that means air conditioning. LDRY -- that means laundry. VICTOR: Oh, now I understand. (searching) I need to find an APT with an HT. KARINA: (looking in legend) HT? What's an HT? VICTOR: Hot tub. KARINA: Oh.. Karina scowls at him. Victor smiles. Karina, Victor, and Max walk down a street looking at the numbers. VICTOR: Well, here it is. MAX: Look at all the cars. KARINA: Victor, we cannot live here. There are too many cars. Karina looks around skeptically. She sees the cars driving by in super-fast motion - the worried mother - as Max points to the street, a big smile on his face. PROSPECTIVE APT. #2: Karina and Victor walk out of a fairly nice two-bedroom and look pretty happy with what they see. VICTOR: Not bad, huh? Just as she's about to say "yes," they hear LOUD HARD ROCK from the next apartment. At the same time, a PUNK ROCKER carrying a BOOM BOX by their door. PUNK ROCKER: You guys are moving in? Cool, man. Because we party up here every night, man. Every night. PUNK ROCKER 2: Yeah, see you tonight. Bye. KARINA: (unhappily) No. VICTOR: I like this one. KARINA: This one's too expensive. VICTOR: Are you sure? KARINA: No.
