Parenting Skills

There are many different skills parents need in order to communicate effectively with teenagers. Although it may be difficult to communicate with teenagers, a good relationship between parents and teenagers brings satisfaction and reward. It is important to listen to teenagers actively and with an open mind.

Discipline should be used to teach, not to punish, and it must be consistent. Being honest with teenagers is difficult, but it brings good results later on. Set a good example, and be a good role model. Telling teenagers what to do is less effective than modeling good behavior. Also, it is important not to condemn or criticize severely. Teenagers want to know that their parents are proud of them, and need recognition, respect and guidance in developing good self-esteem. Parents should look for chances to reward and recognize good behavior, and share their own experiences with stories, wit and humor.
