Episode Ten - Dealing with the Law

Life Skills

Directions:

Read and Understand These Concepts:

Law And The Police

Know the law. It is very important to know what to do when you deal with the police. A police officer will not arrest you without a valid reason. There must be just cause. The officer will read you your rights. If the situation is serious, listen carefully and ask for legal counsel. You have the right to an attorney. There are free legal aid centers that can help you. If you cannot afford a lawyer, the court will provide you with one, free of charge.

If a police officer stops you while you are driving, be sure to have all the important documents: your driver license, proof of insurance, and the vehicle registration. The officer will often ask you if you know why you were stopped. Remain calm and cooperate, answer politely and respectfully. If you receive a citation, it is important to sign it. Signing the citation does not mean that you are guilty. It only means that you have to appear in court. An officer has the right to search your car if he believes there is something suspicious inside your car. An open alcohol container, a weapon, or narcotics will be reasons for your car to be searched. Be sure you know your rights and the laws that protect you.
